I Can Understand Book

Aviva Cantor is the author of I Can Understand, an autobiographical children's book that tells the story of Aviva's relationship with her brother, who was physically and mentally disabled.

Originally from Boston, MA, Aviva has lived in Madison for 5 years after growing up in Charlotte, NC, and attending college in Cincinnati, OH. She is a fashion copywriter with a background in design and journalism. Aviva is also a competitive figure skater and loves being involved with many aspects of the sport.

What led you to decide to start your business?
The book is the result of a successful Kickstarter campaign. I'm so grateful for the support we received!

What’s your favorite part of running your business?
I love being able to share my brother's story with as many people as possible. I also enjoy finding out who has been touched by our story. An elementary school principal in Washington, D.C. found out about the book and bought 5 copies for her school. She said that she wanted every child in the school to read the book so that they could have a better understanding of their new schoolmate, a young boy with cerebral palsy.

What’s the most challenging part of running your business?
Getting the word out! It's tough to get the book sold in stores, so online outlets have been our best bet so far.

Is there anything new or exciting happening with your business now or in the future?
I have future plans to translate the book into other languages. It would be great to find an international audience.

Name one of your favorite local Madison restaurants, bars, or coffee/tea shops.
Lao Laan Xang. Get the squash curry!

What’s one of your favorite things to do in the Madison area?
Painting at Paint Bar on Willy Street. I think I get a little better with every visit.

Where is one of your favorite places to go to relax in the Madison area?
Anything lakeside! Tenney Park and Yahara Place Park are great. I also love the view from the tiki bar at the East Side Club.

What was one of your childhood dreams?
It's a toss up between being a professional ice show skater and becoming Madonna's backup singer.

Is there anything else you would like the community to know about you or your business?
I am available for book readings and signings in the Madison area.

What’s the best way the Madison community can help you and your business continue to grow and succeed?
Continue sharing the book on social media--it has been our greatest outlet for success.
