What led you to decide to start your business?
I've always had the entrepreneurial itch and wanted to pursue a business that helped small, local businesses succeed. I created a board game called "Whoya" a couple of years ago and found that shipping costs and marketing/promoting the game were two of the biggest pain points. I started MadisonLocalShops.com to help mitigate those costs for local businesses and give them an outlet to sell and promote their products.
What’s your favorite part of running your business?
A few of my favorite things are 1) Interacting with the owners of small businesses to find ways to help them grow. 2) Delivering local products to customers and hearing the joy that the products and gift baskets have brought them and their friends/family. 3) The challenges of having to run every part of the business. There's never a dull moment and I get to do a huge variety of things, which makes every day new and exciting.
What’s the most challenging part of running your business?
Promoting the website and getting through the clutter of the advertising everywhere. I don't have a huge marketing budget so I'm constantly having to find creative ways to spread the word about MadisonLocalShops.com.
Is there anything new or exciting happening with your business now or in the upcoming months?
I'm in the process of organizing a holiday pop-up shop and trying to find ways to sell products and promote the site in person more. Keep your eye out for me around Madison this holiday season!
Name one of your favorite local Madison restaurants, bars, or coffee/tea shops.
Mickies Dairy Bar is one of my favorite spots in Madison. I'm always optimistic and order the scrambler. I end up having two or three meals leftover to take home. Their shakes are also top notch.
What’s one of your favorite things to do in the Madison area?
There's so many great things to do it's hard to name just one, but I'll go with just enjoying a summer night on the Terrace. It's hard to top good company, a few beverages, and some great local music.
Where is one of your favorite places to go to relax in the Madison area?
I lived on Lakeshore path for three years in college and I still love walking along the path to relax and escape the city bustle.
What was one of your childhood dreams?
Outside of being a professional basketball player, I've always dreamed of finding a way to really help people and bring joy into others lives. Every day I do my best to keep that in mind when making decisions.
What’s the best way the Madison community can help you and your business continue to grow and succeed?
